Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd has an extensive plan to launch new models in the Indian market. Among these, the Indian manufacturer plans to launch its first flex-fuel passenger vehicle by the end of this calendar year or in early 2027. The update comes as the government plans to shift to a higher ethanol blend in petrol, aiming to reach E100 eventually.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, stated that the latest government notification seeks to establish a clear category for flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on varying ethanol blend levels. Further discussions on adopting higher ethanol blends are currently in progress with the government through the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Shailesh Chandra also highlighted that Tata Motors has already made its vehicles E20-compliant since 2023. The brand had showcased its flex-fuel vehicles at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. This comes as part of the brand's efforts to transition to cleaner fuels with electric, CNG, and hydrogen vehicle technologies.

Tata Motors had showcased the Punch flex-fuel concept at the Auto Expo 2025. The model was powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine as the standard version, but featured key modifications to the ECU, fuel injection system, and exhaust after-treatment setup to enable compatibility with varying ethanol blends.

The Punch is one of the popular models of the brand in the Indian market and is already offered with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, CNG, and electric. Introducing a flex-fuel variant would further strengthen Tata Motors' multi-powertrain strategy.

A flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) is designed to run on petrol, ethanol, or a mix of both. Ethanol, a cleaner-burning biofuel, is typically produced from crops such as sugarcane and maize. Unlike conventional petrol cars, FFVs are equipped with specially engineered components, including the engine, fuel pump, and injectors that can withstand higher levels of ethanol, which is more corrosive in nature.

While most modern cars in India are compatible with up to E20 (20% ethanol blend), the government is now pushing towards higher blends like E85, which require dedicated flex-fuel technology.
