India's electric vehicle industry has started FY2027 on a strong note, recording its best-ever April sales performance. According to the latest Vahan portal data, total EV retail sales across electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles reached 2,39,025 units in April 2026, registering a massive 41 percent year-on-year growth compared to 1,69,360 units sold in April 2025.

Electric Two-Wheeler Sales: April 2026

The electric two-wheeler segment remained the biggest contributor to India's EV sales in April 2026. A total of 1,48,740 electric scooters and motorcycles were sold during the month, marking a strong 61 percent YoY increase over 92,536 units sold in April 2025.

Electric two-wheelers alone accounted for 62 percent of India's total EV sales last month, up from 55 percent a year ago. The growth comes despite the reduced price gap between internal combustion engine (ICE) scooters and EVs after GST revisions.

Industry experts believe the possibility of petrol price hikes due to the ongoing global crude oil supply crisis is encouraging more buyers to shift towards electric mobility.

Leading the market were TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, Hero Vida and Ola Electric. Together, these top five manufacturers held nearly 84 percent of the total e-2W market share in April 2026.

Electric Three-Wheeler Sales: April 2026

India's electric three-wheeler industry recorded comparatively slower growth but continued to strengthen its position in the overall three-wheeler market. In April 2026, total e-3W sales stood at 64,549 units, up 3 percent from 62,489 units sold during the same period last year.
While the segment's share in overall EV sales dropped to 27 percent from 37 percent in April 2025, electric three-wheelers continued eating into the market share of CNG-powered three-wheelers.

Out of the total 1,06,905 three-wheelers sold in India during April 2026, electric models accounted for nearly 60 percent.

The competition in the electric three-wheeler space remained intense between Mahindra Last Mile Mobility and Bajaj Auto. The difference between both manufacturers was just 567 units during the month. Other major players in the segment included TVS Motor Company and several regional manufacturers.
