BYD Planning New Hybrid SUV For India? Sealion 6 DM-i Could Be It

BYD seems to be quietly planning on expanding its product lineup in the Indian market. Even though the brand has not made an official announcement. They seem to be preparing a plug-in hybrid SUV, BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, for launch in the country. Spied testing undisguised on Indian roads, it is speculated to be the brand's next product in the market, joining an all-EV lineup.

Diving into the details, the BYD Sealion 7 is a mid-size SUV with a length of 4,775 mm, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height. The latest spy images reveal the rear end of the model featuring a sharp design. It is easy to spot elements like connected tail lamps and a tough-looking bumper with metallic accents.

Based on the international-spec model, the BYD Sealion 6 features an upright front stance with a sleek design language. It gets a slatted grille, sharp LED headlamps with DRLs, and a sculpted bonnet. The side profile includes body-coloured door handles, a strong shoulder line, chrome window surrounds, large 19-inch alloy wheels, body cladding, and a gently sloping roofline.

The cabin of the Sealion 6 is equipped with a long list of premium features, including a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-speaker Infinity sound system. The list also includes a head-up display, synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, a voice assistant, and both Type-A and Type-C USB ports.

For safety, the SUV relies on seven airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and a 360-degree surround view system. It also gets hill hold control, adaptive cruise control, auto hold, and a comprehensive suite of ADAS features.

Globally, the Sealion 6 is offered with two powertrain options. The base version uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 98 hp and 122 Nm, paired with an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade battery. It features a front-wheel-drive setup, with the electric motor delivering 145 kW (197 PS) and 300 Nm, for a combined output of 160 kW (217 hp). This variant offers an electric-only range of up to 80 km.

The top-spec variant is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 130 hp and 220 Nm, combined with an all-wheel-drive system. Its electric motor generates 150 kW (204 hp), taking the total system output to 238 kW (323 hp). The AWD version offers a pure electric range of around 70 km and is likely to be the variant introduced in the Indian market.
