Kerala celebrates 'Attachamayam'

Kochi: 'Attachamayam', heralding the start of 10-day 'Onam' festivities in Kerala, was held with splendour at nearby Tripunithura, the capital of the erstwhile Cochin state.

Colourful and decorated floats depicting traditional art forms like Kathakali, 'Pullikalli', 'Theyyam', 'Mayilattam' were taken out in front of a huge crowd lined up on both sides of the road as rain gods did not play spoil sport.

Decked up elephants also participated in the procession.

Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan inaugurated the festivities, while Excise and Ports minister, K Babu presided.

The Atham flag was hoisted by Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob.

In Thrissur, a huge flower carpet was laid out in front of the Vadakkumnathan temple as part of atham celebrations.
