26/11: Remote-controlled from Pakistan
Thursday November 5, 2009
For years now, as a journalist I have been covering the day-to-day hearings of various terror trials. Attacks that have killed hundreds and have always attempted to butcher the 'spirit of Mumbai'. The Ghatkopar BEST bus blast, the 7/11 attack on crowded trains, blasts at Mulund, Vile Parle and the Bombay Central railway stations, the twin blasts that shook the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar, the series of bomb blasts by the Indian Mujahideen across the country and of course, who can forget the 1993 Bombay blasts.

But who is targeting us? Why the anti-India rhetoric that brainwashes innocent boys and sends them packing to the schools of fundamentalism? What is their agenda? What do they really want beyond Kashmir?

Questions that each time, the police across the country, the home ministry, the armed forces - every one - have answered by accusing Pakistan. Of Pakistan, being the "epicentre of terror" as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh put it. And of Pakistan-based terrorist organisations like the Lashkar-e-Toiba and others, all being blamed for masterminding such attacks with the covert backing of the ISI.

But what has always been somewhat missing is the 'undeniable' evidence that removes all such doubts about the elements in Pakistan who are supporting these acts. During the 1993 Bombay blast case, grenades were found with 'Made in Pakistan' seals. It was alleged, these were planted. The RDX which was smuggled in also came from Karachi. Again, it was argued, they could have been planted by India to malign Pakistan. The confessions given by the accused - most now convicted and the special TADA court has also upheld the veracity and voluntariness of their confessions - again revealed how Dawood Ibrahim with the help of Pakistan's ISI, planned what has till date been the deadliest attack on India. Again, these confessions, many claimed were forced out from the accused.

But when 26/11 happened, Pakistan was the one struggling to ward off the 'undeniable' proof collected by India and the US. On November 3, 2009  - day 127 of what is now popularly also known as the Kasab trial -  the prosecution presented in court one such piece of evidence. Portions selected from the hours of telephonic conversations that took place between the terrorists in Mumbai, their various handlers in Pakistan and even a Generalbhai perhaps from the Pakistani Army. For the first time, we also got to hear how Israel was making desperate efforts - all the way from Washington - to save their citizens from the clutches of terrorists at Nariman House.

An interesting aside. During the negotiations, the Israeli official who goes by the name Levi asks the terrorist, what did he want. The terrorist immediately demands for the safe release of his colleague who had just been captured alive by the police at Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty. The terrorist had earlier been told by his handlers monitoring the Indian media that Ismail - the seniormost of the 10 terrorists who attacked Mumbai - had been captured. Little did he or his handlers then know that it was the much-junior Ajmal Kasab who had been nabbed.

So when this part was played in the open court, Kasab began to giggle. Overjoyed, that after all, his handlers and colleagues did care for him and wanted him out. Happy, that it was for his release, the lives of several Jews was at stake. Numbed by the thought, that the Israeli government was almost made to crawl on its knees, forced to negotiate with his ilk, for his release in exchange for the lives of the Chabad House Jews.

In all probability, in Kasab's circles, this is the greatest achievement one can aspire for. A yet-to-be-'martyr' knocking at the doors of jannat. But little did Kasab know that his colleagues weren't even aware that he - Kasab - had been captured. And nor were they negotiating for him. It was for his buddy, Ismail, who had by then been killed by the Mumbai Police.

But moving beyond Kasab, these audio conversations throw some light into the dark and complex world of terrorists.

Hear them. At times, their all-too-apparent indoctrination, will make you shrink with fear. The casualness with which blood is spilled, hostages threatened will send a chill down your spine. At others, their stupidity will make you wonder how 10 buffoons - guided by their handlers - could take on the might of the NSG and the Indian Army.

Hear, the original audio conversations of what happened during the 26/11 attack. Tell us, what you think of the men who kept India hostage for 3 days.

Pakistan's Army (including ISI),which infact dictates its foreign policy towards India, has been formenting trouble in india, via their "Jehadi" groups, under the guise of deniabilit y.The Terrorists/"Jehadi" groups are only the functioning arms of our Not-so -friendly neig hbourhood i.e Pakistan.Their tactic is to sen d India to a wild goose chase, via diplomatica lly maintaining the cover/guise of deniabiali ty. No wonder that nailing Pak lie, more often than not, is not going to be an easy cup of tea.Though Diplomatic efforts cannt be ruled out in pressurising Pak, but thatone wonders would yield too little too late,as 26/11 case would suggest, just dossier exchange process,it has been till now,& the prime accused Hafiz Saeed is roaming free. The only way is to put a cost, preferably an enormous one, on Pak, by whichever means Covert, economic, diplomatic,military(low-intensity),supporting insurgency groups in Sind,Balochistan etc.But the important que is whether we have the ways & means, and last but not the least the political will to do the job, which some of our "gentlemen PM" like Gujral found "immoral" when he stopped all covert actions of RAW.Remember, we are a civilian govt & RAW reports to PM unlike its Pak counterpart which reports to the army.

In one of the comments, one Jerry George, for some reason, best known to him, labels india timid nation.I wonder how & when he came to such a firm conclusion.Apparently he has for gotten 1971, when post world war2,a nation was literally broken into 2.militarily.This, coming from a "timid" nation is no mean achie vment. And how many "bravehearts "surrendered without putting up much fight?93000,if my memmory serves me right.A record of sorts. It pains, when some of us keep on denigrating the sacrifices & achievements made by our jawans both in the past & to this day. Our victory in Kargil in virtually impossible conditions, was not only celebrated by the country but praised internationally too. We are in the midst of cross-border terrorism ,& there are different ways of fighting it, including diplomatic, covert , better vigilan ce & policing, curbing infiltration etc.

the best part in the audio was when they have entered our land and were asking us to negotiate with them for their release after killing so many innocent people , what were they thinking?!! all we need to do is ,strengthen our armed forces , grow economically, move from regional power to super power steadily and side by side drain Pak badly out of its resources, may this be making a Dam on jhelum or Chenab or killing PCB out of business or making afganistan our central asian base ,even making Iran our partner can also help in long run (though it might sound detrimental to our relations with Israel and America) . we need not wage a war on a country like pakistan , we can kill it anyway?

These terrorist attacks are result of fractured society...the day we all are united no one can plan to attack us.For ages politicians are playing divide and rule politices ..but this is time to unite and rule.

Wow i heard all the tapes. It was amazing. However i was saddened by the fact that the Bombay Police would not even bother to answer the Israeli Official who wanted to negotitate with the terrorists at Nariman House. So much time was wasted for nothing. I think India needs to upgrade its entire security apparatus in the most modern and efficient manner so that this type of miscommunication does not occur again. I sincerely hope that the general public of India and Pakistan listen to these tapes and comprehend how brutal these terrorists are. And to Pakistan i say stop harboring these murderers they are not Muslims but they are the real Kaffirs.

There is no denying that we are timid nation. The only solution in this direction is to spread the awareness. Only then can we, as a nation make wise and conscious decisions. There is no point in blaming the political lot for this embarassment. They were elected by us in the first place. People should research on the party agenda before they elect any party to power. The damage done is part of our history now, and its about time we start moving on and think about what needs to be done, rather than following the very mundane ritual of mudslinging, everytime a disaster strikes our country. When we stand united in our actions and decisions, our house will be in order, and there will be no room for any trouble.

Why Govt / Public response be elicited that what / How India should response if another 26/09 is repeated. This will help provide feed back to the Govt of the day on what public perceive. The delayed response has taken heavy toll besides enecting length drama of prolonged human sufferings ( being fied at the hands of terrorist and we can't even imagine their trauma )and given satisfaction to the perpetrator at Pak. The Home Ministry now in the safe hands of sensitive and responsible Minister, I hope that will deliver swift response to the terrorist. The measure taken by the Minister to create Hubs at Metro Centre, Provision of latest Guns, itself to cut short movement time. Other measures to be evolved depends upon understanding the security hasszles that the defence forces encountered will have to be thoroughly analysed. Security will also have to think whether they can develop lazer guided precision weapons to eliminate those elements within short time to mitigate the elonged sufferings of the hostages. It should also spur the scientific community to invent new weapons to deal with elements to provide a deadly blow such misadventure. One thing that the Govt. of the day has taken, to give security response rather than negotiation itself have enhanced image of UPA's determination to respond sword for sword. Let us hope that the EVER AGILE AND ACTIVE Home Minister will come out with greater / newer measures to deal such eventuality. Let us strengthen his hands. May God give him long life to work out new solutions.

Aren't we fools to have all such evidence and sit doing nothing ?

India must be ashamed that this nonsense went on for 3 days. Makes you wonder whether the terrorists could have done all these things in such nonchalant way without the knowledge and assistance of someone entrenched deep within Indian law enforcement. I shudder to think what the hostages felt like during those 3 days. Shame on India and Shame on the Indian Govt for not deftly handling the situation from the first moment on.

Why does Pakistan always have the habit of pointing fingers at others even when the world including themselves knows that terrorism is well nourished in their country......More over it is a global issue and no man is not under the risk of a terror attack.....
