Mumbai potholes cause woman's death but son is blamed

Mumbai: In a bizarre case, a son has been booked by the Thane police for rash and negligent driving that cost his mother's life.

On Friday afternoon, Dr. Mahesh Patil a resident of Badlapur in suburban Thane was on his way back home along with his mother on his bike when they met with an accident while he was trying to steer his bike through the pothole ridden Dombavali - Badlapur pipeline road.

His mother incurred head injuries and was rushed to a local hospital but passed away on Saturday morning.

On Sunday he learnt from the police that he has been booked in the case.

A case of rash and negligent has been registered by the Thane police under section 279 of the IPC, which attracts a punishment of imprisonment for 6 months, or fine of 1,000 rupees, or both.

Potholes ridden roads are a chronic problem in Mumbai. This is the third death in Mumbai due to potholes. In August this year the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan  had pulled up the BMC for poor condition of roads and shoddy monsoon repairs.
