Mumbai:
A sessions court today sentenced a 34-year-old man, who had attacked a female student, mistaking her as his own wife near Dadar railway station in central Mumbai last year.
According to the prosecution, the accused, Vijay Sanglekar, had attacked the woman as he was enraged with his wife for filing a divorce case.
Filing a case of harassment against Sanglekar and his family for demanding dowry, his wife had their house in Sindhudurg district in coastal Maharashtra last year.
She also filed a divorce petition, which had enraged Sanglekar.
She then came to stay with her parents in Nallasopara in Thane district.
In December 2012, he arrived in Mumbai as he came to know that his wife had taken up a job at a private firm.
"Sanglekar came to know that his wife was doing a job. So he came to Mumbai with an intention to attack her as he knew that she gets off at Dadar station in Central Mumbai at 9am everyday," a police source said.
On December 17 last year, armed with a sickle, the accused came to Dadar station to kill his wife.
However, he mistook the 25-year-old student of chartered accountancy student Sonal Lapadia as his wife and attacked her on her face, neck and hands. At the time of attack, Sonal had covered her face with a cloth.
However, he soon realised that she was not his wife when Sonal removed the cloth from her face.
Though Sanglekar tried to escape the onlookers caught him and handed him over to Matunga police, while Sonal was admitted to hospital.
During the court trial, public prosecutor Shankar Yerende examined around 10 witnesses, including Sonal, Sanglekar's wife and medical experts to prove his case.
Accepting Yerende's arguments, Judge U B Hejib convicted Sanglekar to ten years of imprisonment.
