Kedarnath, the Himalayan town famous or an eighth century Lord Shiva temple, could soon be a hub for adventure sports in Uttarakhand.
As part of the efforts to rebuild the state's economy after the devastation of the June 2013 floods, the state government said it is promoting the town as a haven for winter sports when the Shiva shrine closes for winter months.
Situated at a height 11,755 feet, Kedarnath is the source of Mandakini River and is about 110 kilometers from Dehradun by air.
The government hopes to cash in the town's scenic surrounding, gradual slopes and snowfall in the month of January and February to attract adventure enthusiasts for skiing, ski-scooter and ski-vehicle rides.
Chief Secretary Rakesh Sharma said that he hoped the town would soon be an adventure sports hotspot. "The government made lots of investments for this," he said.
"Depending on the weather, we will keep the helipad free of snow, will take people from Guptkashi in a helicopter for some Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 per seat and offer winter sports like skiing," Mr Sharma said.
