Senior politician Nitin Gadkari is all set for a second term as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President, according to sources. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has endorsed Mr Gadkari to continue as the party President, sources have told NDTV.
Amendment to the party constitution is likely to be taken up during a meeting of the BJP top brass in Mumbai on May 24-25 that will pave way for Mr Gadkari to continue as President, say sources.
Currently, there is no provision in the party laws that allow any BJP President to be re-elected for a second stint. According to the current BJP constitution, the party President can only have a three-year term.
Mr Gadkari's re-election as the BJP President would mean that he will remain in charge of the party for the next Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2014.
This is after Mr Gadkari's leadership skills have been questioned by some in the recent past. Former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and a controversial minister in Mayawati's government Babu Singh Kushwaha's induction into the BJP during the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh reportedly led to some discomfort in the party. There have also been reported tussle within the BJP during the Rajya Sabha polls in Jharkhand along with reports of rebellion within the party in Karnataka and Rajasthan.
