Gadkari faints, BJP rally stops Delhi

New Delhi: Lakhs of workers, traffic jams in the national capital, detentions, the party chief fainting.

The massive rally called by the BJP in the capital today to protest against the UPA government's "poor economic policies" that led to sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities has been anything but uneventful.

The sweltering Delhi heat has not deterred the five-lakh odd workers who have been gathering through the day. It did, however, manage to fell BJP chief Nityin Gadkari briefly. He blacked out in the heat.

This is the new BJP president's first show of strength. And all top leaders are attending, including some BJP chief ministers.

Some workers were stopped by the police and detained while moving from the Ramlila grounds where they had gathered, to Jantar Mantar where the rally would end.

As expected, there have been big traffic snarls. Delhi traffic police have issued an advisory so that commuters can plan their movement. (Forum: Should parties be fined for disruptive rallies?)

The roads affected are the Ring Road, Mathura Road, C-Hexagon, Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Jafar Marg, J L N  Marg, Asaf Ali Road, Netaji Subhash Marg, Ranjit Singh Marg, Tolstoy Marg, Sikandara Road, Bara Khamba Road, Parliament Street and Ashoka Road etc.
