Fire breaks out at Navi Mumbai port, one dead

Mumbai: One person was killed and three others were injured in a fire that broke out in a container yard near Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Uran in Navi Mumbai today, resulting in an explosion, police said.

"A fire broke out this afternoon that resulted in explosion in one of the containers in Container Freight Station in Navghar village this afternoon. One person was killed and three suffered injuries in the incident," Ankush Shinde, Deputy Police Commissioner, Navi Mumbai, told PTI.

Seven fire engines and four water tankers were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said Fire Brigade officials.

"Fire Brigade personnel say the fire may have broken out as the containers had chemicals. If the probe suggests the incident took place due to negligence on the part of the company that owns containers, appropriate action would be initiated against it," Shinde added.

The government-run JNPT operates India's largest shipping port in adjoining Navi Mumbai.
