Congress Creating Unrest in Punjab: Sukhbir Badal

Sukhbir Singh Badal also led a delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee and asked for de-recognition of the Congress party.

New Delhi:

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today accused the Congress of fanning unrest in the state by encouraging anti-national elements and secessionist forces.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Mr Badal alleged that the Congress has created an alliance with separatists.

"Everyone knows what Punjab went through in the 80s. Congress under Rahul Gandhi is trying to create the same environment in Punjab. Congress has created mahagathbandhan (alliance) with separatists. They want to disturb peace of state and country. All these organisations are with Pakistan or ISI," Mr Badal said.

Speaking to NDTV, Mr Badal said that Rahul Gandhi came to Punjab to create unrest. He also said the Congress party had sided with pro-Khalistani forces in 1980s and are repeating what they did then.

The role of the Congress, he claimed, was "exposed" when a Sikh congregation was held on November 10 in Amritsar where a pro-Khalistan resolution was passed and was allegedly attended by leaders of the Congress party.

Mr Badal also led a delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee and asked for de-recognition of the Congress party, calling it "anti-national".

Congress leader Captain Amrinder Singh countered the attack.

The attack comes two days after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi met President Mukherjee asking for a judicial probe in the Faridkot police firing case that killed two people following the desecration of the Sikh holy book, the 'Guru Granth Sahib'.

Hitting back at the the Akali Dali, former chief minister and Congress leader Captain Amrinder Singh accused the Punjab government for a worsened law and order in the state and passing the blame for its failures.

Mr Singh said, "It is natural for Sukhbir and his father to feel frustrated that when Rahul Gandhi is hailed and welcomed with open arms across Punjab while going on padyatra. The Badals cannot even dare to venture out lest people thrash them like their ministers."

Mr Singh said that the presence of a huge gathering in Amritsar was "anger" against the government which was portrayed by the Akali Dal as a pro-Khalistan movement.
