Banda rape victim finally released from jail, gets security

Lucknow: After spending over a month behind bars, the young girl from Banda, who was allegedly raped by a BSP MLA, who then had her jailed on false charges of theft, is finally out of prison.

She is now being provided security after the MLA said he would seek revenge.

This comes hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati ordered her release and asked the Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary to provide security to her.

After drawing flak from critics on her birthday for inaction in the Banda teen rape case, Mayawati also said she will constitute a fast-track court to get justice for the minor girl.

Speaking on the occasion of her birthday, Mayawati said, "From the prima facie it seems that the girl was wrongly framed by the MLA in theft case... will constitute fast-track court to get justice... if the MLA is found guilty of raping the girl will act against the MLA."

The Opposition and her several critics again targeted her for the birthday expenditure and her slow response to the MLA rape case. But in no mood to take flak, Mayawati hit back by saying, "The Opposition is talking many baseless things about my birthday celebrations, this shows their attitude towards Dalit, the more they talk about my jewellery and clothes, my parents and well-wishers who have come to wish me, the more their fundamentalist mentality will be exposed."

On allegations that the Uttar Pradesh government is not doing enough in the Banda teen rape case, Mayawati said that "The CB-CID was probing the case and the government will not take the matter lightly."

Earlier today, the CB-CID filed a closure report before the remand magistrate in the theft case stating there was not enough evidence to prove that the girl stole anything.

The BSP MLA from Banda, Purshottam Narain Dwivedi, was accused of raping a minor Dalit girl and then implicating her in a case of theft.

He was suspended from the party and later arrested after preliminary investigations confirmed that the girl was indeed raped, even though the MLA denied the charges.
