Another fake encounter case reopens
Ahmedabad: It has been an 8-year-long wait for Shabbir to register a complaint about his brother Sadiq's murder in an alleged fake encounter by the Gujarat Police in 2003.

Till now, the Ahmedabad Police have allegedly refused to enter his complaint and to mention in the FIR the names of the officials involved in the encounter.

The breakthrough came for Shabbir last week after the Gujarat High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the case.

As if on cue, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch has accepted his complaint. But its FIR is still silent of the names of the officers.

"I had specially mentioned the names of officers and urged that no matter what position they hold, they should be brought to the book," said Shabbir.

And now, the CBI will investigate the alleged fake encounter.

"The CBI will consider the petition of the victim," said Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha.

The police who killed Sadiq have alleged that he was a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative on his way to attack Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Considering in the similar Ishrat Jehan encounter case, the Gujarat Police are already on the back foot; Shabbir may be closer to justice.
