Chandigarh: A day after over 130 students were massacred by Pakistan Taliban at a school in Peshawar, Punjab has been put on high alert, following intelligence inputs.

All district police chiefs, police commissioners and the Inspector Generals of Police have been directed to start special patrolling near educational institutions, bus stands, railway stations, crowded and religious places and have been asked to keep watch on the activities of anti-social elements, say sources.

Highways would be subjected to special checking during this heightened alert. To not take any chance, patrolling would continue day and night.

The border districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran and Ferozepur will remain on extra-high alert, sources added.

Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema has directed officials to ensure tight security arrangements in all educational institutions, both private as well as government. The District Education Officers would make weekly rounds to check arrangements.

The Deputy Commissioners and the police chiefs have also been instructed to make arrangements around these institutions. No outsider would be allowed to enter without permission.

On Tuesday morning, nine Pakistan Taliban militants entered the Army Public School in Peshawar and started targeting children. The Taliban said the attack was revenge for a military offensive against their safe havens along the border with Afghanistan.
