One civilian has been killed in Pakistani firing in RS Pura sector of Jammu
Arnia, Jammu:
Three people, including a woman, were killed and 22 were injured in heavy shelling by Pakistani troops along the International Border in RS Pura sector of Jammu today.
Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian High Commissioner to register its protest against the retaliatory firing from the Indian side, which it claimed had killed six civilians and injured about 40.
"Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing. Initially, small arms were used but later on mortars bombs were shelled on BSF posts and civilian areas in RS Pura and Arnia sectors since midnight", a spokesman for the Border Security Force said.
Indian troops retaliated; the exchange of fire is still underway.
On Tuesday, an Army officer was killed in firing by Pakistani soldiers in the Nowgam sector in the state. The junior commissioned officer was hit by sniper fire when he came out of his bunker. He died from his injuries later, an Army spokesperson said.
Six civilians, including a minor, were killed on August 15, Independence Day, as Pakistani forces engaged in intense shelling from across the border.
There have been 55 violations of the 2003 border ceasefire agreement by Pakistan in August and over 245 violations this year so far.
