Arvind Kejriwal elected AAP leader in Delhi Assembly

The AAP made a stunning debut with 28 seats in Delhi.

New Delhi: In a meeting this evening of its 28 newly-elected legislators, the Aam Aadmi Party unanimously chose its founder and chief Arvind Kejriwal as their leader in the Delhi Assembly.

The new-elected legislators also decided not to stake any claim to form the government in Delhi.

In an unprecedented situation, the national capital today saw the party with the largest mandate, the BJP, deciding to sit in the opposition and asking the Kejriwal-led party to form the government.

Delhi elected a hung Assembly with the BJP's 32 tally falling four seats short of the simple majority. The Congress is a distant third with 8 seats.

If no party stakes claim to form the government, Delhi may see the President's Rule imposed on it, with fresh elections to be called within six months. In that case, experts say, the Delhi polls may coincide with the national elections, due by May.

Riding high on their historical debut, the AAP has called a victory meeting of its candidates and volunteers at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Wednesday.

It was also decided that the winners will go door to door in their constituencies to thank the voters in a gesture that replicates their strategy during the campaigning in the run-up to the December 4 polls.
