High Court gives lifeline to 6-year-old heart patient

New Delhi: Coming to the rescue of a six-year-old boy suffering from heart disease, the Delhi High Court has directed state government-run GB Pant Hospital to provide him treatment free of cost.

"I have fallen unconscious twice. I have constant pain in my heart," said Aman, son of a poor labourer. One of the valves in his heart isn't working properly.

And his father, who barely manages to earn enough to have two square meals a day for his family, cannot afford the surgery. But now, the court order has given the family a reason to cheer.

"My son has been admitted to hospital. Now he will get medical treatment," said Aman's father, Suresh.

For a week, his father did several rounds of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) but was told Aman needs a surgery that would cost lakhs. With no other option in sight, he moved court.

Upholding the Right to Live and Right to Health, the Delhi High Court instructed GB Pant Hospital to admit Aman and treat him.

After the court's order, Aman has been admitted to hospital. Soon, he will be operated upon.

For a desperate father who had lost all hope the court's order has come as a lifeline, not just for Aman but for his entire family.
