Nashik varsity goes without VC for 10 months

Mumbai: While the recent appointment of the Mumbai University's vice-chancellor remains mired in controversies, another important university in the state is running without a V-C.

The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, to which most of the medical colleges in the state are affiliated, has also been without a V-C for more than ten months. The appointment process has just begun and the search committee has received around 30 applications. Dean of KEM Hospital Sanjay Oak is one of the applicants.

According to sources, October 10 was the last date for receiving applications. The committee, which is headed by Hari Gautam, former University Grants Commission chairman, will scrutinise applications and shortlist five for the interview round. The interview round is expected to be in the first week of December, 2010.

The MUHS was in a legal scuffle over the V-C's post, after failing to get it filled within six months from the end of term of the last V-C, Mrudula Phadke, in December 2009. Nilima Kshirsagar was then appointed as the acting V-C. The government was asked to amend the MUHS Act to provide for one-year tenure to the acting VC. R Krishnakumar is now the acting V-C for the MUHS, until it gets a full time one.
