Mumbai: Boy's leg amputated due to hospital's negligence

Mumbai: Seventeen-year-old Yogesh Pal's family alleges he is the latest victim of doctors' negligence, after his leg had to be amputated on developing gangrene. A student of Aggarwal College in Kalyan, Pal met with an accident on October 22, and was rushed to the Dr Godbole Shree Hospital, where his leg was plastered under the supervision of Dr Vivek Malvi.

However, within two days, Pal complained of severe pain in his leg, and was taken back and attended to by Dr Prafful Wadadkar, who recommended Pal be taken to a better hospital in Mumbai, the family says.

The family says they were horrified when doctors at KEM Hospital informed them that Yogesh's leg would have to be amputated due to gangrene. The family says that the doctors informed them that the plaster was tied too tight, because of which the nerves had got blocked and blood circulation had stopped, leading to decay. "On Tuesday, his entire right leg had to be amputated," said Yogesh's brother Sanjay Pal.

However, the administrative officer of Godbole Hospital Dr Rachna Nandikole said the patient had been warned about precautions. "The patient was told that there could be a possibility of swelling after the plaster and he should inform us of discomfort. However, he came to the hospital only after a day-and-a-half," said Dr Nandikole.

The family claimed to have evidence to prove this was a case of medical negligence. "As soon as he recovers, we shall file a complaint with the police," said Sanjay. Doctors at KEM were unavailable for comment and Pal has now been shifted to Kasturba Hospital, sources said.
