Goa waiter who killed UK tourist commits suicide

Panaji: A beach shack waiter serving life imprisonment for killing a British lady was found dead inside the prison on Wednesday night, official sources said today.

Anand Kambli, 30, convicted for murdering 52-year-old Denise Higgis, was found hanging in the toilet of his cell at central jail, Aguada.

"We have registered a case of custodial death and started an inquiry," Inspector General of Prisons, Mihir Vardhan, told PTI this afternoon.

He said the convict used a meter-long bandage, which he had kept after being transported back from medical examination, to hang himself when 23 other convicts from the same cell were fast asleep.

Kambli was convicted for life imprisonment on March 24 for killing Higgis in Margao town, in April 2007.

The prosecution had proved that Kambli, who used to borrow money from the British lady, killed her when she asked him to repay.

The investigation had proved that Kambli had taken around Rs 50,000 from Higgis brother, based in Kolkata, to start a hotel in Goa.

This was the second case of custodial death reported in last one week in Goa. Earlier, the UK's most wanted criminal Ajay Kaushal died while being taken from jail in the port town of Vasco to a state-run hospital.

Incidentally, both the prisoners were sharing the same cell when Kambli was under trial, officials said.
