Locals allege police inaction after 5-year-old boy murdered

Chandigarh: Security has been deployed at Burail area as locals took to streets. The locals accused the police of inaction, after the body of a 5 year old boy, kidnapped a fortnight ago, was found in a bag in Mohali.

Anti-riot vehicles were positioned at the site and traffic on many roads was diverted as the crowd raised slogans against the police. They demanded that an FIR be registered against policemen whose alleged negligence led to the mishandling of the case, according to the police.

Khushpreet Singh was kidnapped from outside his residence on December 21. The boy's parents had paid a ransom of Rs four lakh to the captors. However, they escaped with the boy and the money after police made a failed rescue attempt.

There was tight security at the government hospital where postmortem examination of the body was to be conducted.

Police said they had booked four persons for blocking traffic, assaulting security personnel and damaging government vehicles and property yesterday.

The news of Khushpreet's murder sparked an angry reaction from his relatives and the crowd, who pelted stones at a police post yesterday. Following this, the police used lathi charge to disperse the agitators.

The body was found wrapped in a blue bag and the victim appeared to have been strangled to death three days back, said the police.

The alleged negligence in the kidnapping case had led to the transfer of two inspectors including Station House Officer of Sector 34 police station to Police Lines. A Special Investigation Team had also been constituted to investigate the case.
