Puducherry: 'Rapists' of Class 12 student kidnapped her by saying her mother had met with an accident

Puducherry: 'Rapists' of Class 12 student kidnapped her by saying her mother had met with an accident
Villupuram, Puducherry: A Class 12 student from Puducherry was allegedly kidnapped and then raped by two men from her village on Monday, the police has said.

According to the 17-year-old girl, the men first kidnapped her by telling her that her mother had been admitted to a hospital following an accident and took her away in a bus. They then sexually assaulted her at a nearby village, she has claimed. On Wednesday morning, the men dropped her at the Villupuram district bus stand from where she contacted her parents.

The Puducherry police have detained the two men based on the girl's complaint. "We have registered a case of kidnapping and rape against both the accused and an investigation is on. The complainant has also been sent for medical examination," I D Shukla, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police in the area, told NDTV.
News agency Press Trust of India quotes a police officer as saying that one of the accused is a bus conductor known to the girl. It adds that the girl was abducted while she was returning after attending a tuition class in a nearby village.

The incident comes at a time when the entire country is mourning the death of 23-year-old medical student 'Amanat' (NOT her real name) who was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi a fortnight ago. The case has stirred massive protests across India, with thousands coming out on the streets pledging to fight in her memory. Activists and protesters are demanding better safety for women and tougher laws for those convicted of rape.

Angry over the Puducherry incident, people from the girl's village and activists staged a "road roko" (road blockade) demanding justice and better safety for women.
