Maharashtra Goes Under President's Rule

Prithviraj Chavan had resigned after NCP broke ties with the Congress.

New Delhi: President's Rule was imposed in Maharashtra today - three days after the Nationalist Congress Part, or NCP, formally ended its ties with the Congress, reducing the Prithviraj Chavan government to a minority.

But for Maharashtra, President's Rule is a technicality, since the state is heading for assembly elections in mid-October. Mr Chavan had resigned on Friday. (Read: Prithviraj Chavan's Resignation Accepted, to Continue as Caretaker Chief Minister)

On Saturday, Home Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the emergency cabinet meeting which approved the imposition of the President's Rule.

On Thursday, the NCP had ended its 15-year-old alliance with the Congress an hour after the BJP split from the Shiv Sena.

After the withdrawal of the NCP with its 62 legislators, the Congress-led Democratic Front government was reduced to a minority in the 288-member house, as it had only 82 legislators. (Read: 'We Will Prove What a Wave is,' Taunts Angry Uddhav Thackeray)

The BJP had demanded that the state be placed immediately under President's Rule.
