China Building Dams in Brahmaputra: Tarun Gogoi Asks PM Modi to Take Up Issue

Zangmu Hydropower Station, Tibet's biggest ever hydropower project, stands more than 3,300 metres above sea level.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue of construction of dams on Brahmaputra with Beijing.

"It is learnt that China is constructing some dams on the Brahmaputra river in the portion flowing through Tibet. This has created many apprehensions in the minds of the people," Mr Gogoi said in a memorandum to the Prime Minister. "We urge the matter be taken up with the Government of China to ensure that the flow of water in the river is not altered in any manner detrimental to Assam."

Last Sunday, November 23, China started generating electricity from the Zangmu Hydropower Station in Tibet, which stands more than 3,300 metres above the sea level. Once the three-phase project is completed by next year, the dam is expected to stand 116 metres (381 feet) high.

But China has plans to build three more dams.

A document approved by the Chinese cabinet recently mentioned three dams to be built at Dagu, Jiacha and Jiexu on Brahmaputra, Indian officials in Beijing had said. But Beijing is yet to officially inform New Delhi about it.

Earlier, India had expressed concern about China's building dams on Brahmaputra, one of the largest Himalayan rivers and a lifeline to the northeastern states. China, however, has assured India that the Zangmu Hydropower Station will have "no implication" for India, the Ministry of External Affairs had said last week.
