New Swedish Prince Named Oscar

Prince Oscar, the second child for Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel was born on Wednesday night.

Stockholm: Sweden's newest addition to the royal family, and third in line to the crown, has been named Prince Oscar Carl Olof, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced today.

Prince Oscar, the second child for Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel was born on Wednesday night at the Karolinska hospital in Stockholm, weighing 3.655 kilos (8.05 pounds), and was given the title Duke of Skane, Sweden's southernmost region.

Prince Daniel, who was present at the birth, said "the baby and Victoria are doing very well."

King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife Queen Silvia now have four grandchildren, with a fifth on the way in April. Oscar's sister Estelle has just celebrated her fourth birthday.

Crown Princess Victoria, 38, married Daniel, a former gym teacher on June 19, 2010 at a wedding that brought together the elite of European royalty in Stockholm.

When Victoria accedes to the throne, she will be the first queen of the Bernadotte dynasty, which has reigned over Sweden for two centuries.

The current royal family has experienced renewed popularity in recent years due in part to the fairytale marriage of children of the sovereign couple, who have all married commoners, and the arrival of grandchildren.
