Indo-Canadian appointed as citizenship judge

Toronto: An Indo-Canadian, who migrated to Canada three decades back, has been appointed as citizenship judge in Vancouver.

Shinder Singh Purewal (47) was administered oath of the office in both Canadian official languages - English and French on Wednesday.

Purewal, who arrived here in September of 1979 with a very little knowledge of English, went on to perfect the language and also committed himself to learning French.

He studied political history at Queen's University in Kingston, and once interviewed Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for his master's thesis on the politics of multiculturalism.

Purewal was just a month-old when his father died. His mother brought him to the country along with his three siblings.
