London:

For four weeks now, the British press has been dominated by the scandal that has tainted all political parties - MPs enriching themselves by misusing tax payers' money.

The public embarrassment has made several MPs stand down and now it has forced four ministers to quit. So with the government in disarray, pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to resign.

The country has already started betting on whether Gordon Brown will remain PM till the next general elections a year away. Newspaper headlines have also been merciless.

Two of Brown's Cabinet colleagues decided to quit, prompting reports the PM had lost control over his Cabinet.

The Home Secretary became the most high-profile victim of the expenses scandal yet. She faced public humiliation when it was revealed she had used government money to fund her husband watching adult films.

The Opposition leader describes this as a government collapsing in front of everyone's eyes.

"No direction, no vision and that is why the Guardian has said time for him to go," said Michael White, chief political editor, The Guardian.

However, the Prime Minister is hanging on.

"I think people have got to recognise in the politicking that goes on that there have been enormous pressures on people," said Brown.

MPs cutting across party lines have been cowering behind the walls of the British Parliament, trying to avoid the huge amount of embarrassment and humiliation heaped upon them by the expenses scandal.

It has already consumed some Cabinet members and it now threatens the PM. The results of the EU election and local election will determine his fate, in the next 48 hours.
