Baghdad: Bombings in the Iraqi capital killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 55 today, security and medical officials said.

The bombings struck central Baghdad's Wathba Square and near Tayran Square.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but bombings in the Iraqi capital are often carried out by the Islamic State jihadist group, which overran swathes of the country in June last year.

Iraqi forces backed by a US-led coalition and Iran have managed to regain significant ground north of Baghdad from IS, but much of western Iraq remains outside government control.
