A beach that should've been all golden sand and crashing waves turned into something else entirely, and the internet hasn't stopped talking about it since. Recently, a digital nomad known as Joey Travels on Instagram posted a reel from Mahabalipuram Beach, and it hit a nerve almost instantly. The content creator showed a stretch of the beach filled with trash and called it 'shameful.'

Foreign Creator Shows Indian Beach Filled With Trash

In the now-viral video, the creator walks along a stretch of the beach visibly overflowing with plastic. There are bottles, wrappers, bags, and all kinds of waste scattered across the sand.

He calls it "the most trashed beach" he has ever seen in his life. He goes on to point out that littering isn't something that has to do with education. Rather, most people are in fact taught not to litter and keep their surroundings clean. Sadly, they just don't act on it.

He points out that many people believe cleaning up is someone else's job, whether that's the government or sanitation workers. "They think that government programs should be put in place to pick up trash, which is true, but IMO that doesn't mean that you shouldn't also pick it up," he says.

"Not every state of India is like this. Southwest India is much better when it comes to picking up trash," he adds. He highlights regions like Ladakh, Sikkim, and parts of the Northeast as places that appear far cleaner, despite fewer resources.

The Internet Users Agree With Him

The video spread quickly, and the reactions came pouring in. A large chunk of users agreed with his evaluation. One user wrote, "Civic sense should be a subject in school in India." Some even noted it as one of India's biggest ongoing issues. Others pointed out that instead of feeling offended, people should treat it as constructive criticism. One person wrote, "Anyone who gets angry at this is part of the problem."

Many users felt it was something that needed to be taught more actively, even suggesting it should be a proper subject in schools. A few even argued that large garbage piles often point to failures in waste management systems, not just individuals. Hopeful for a cleaner future, one user shared how they're teaching their young nephews to handle their own waste responsibly, adding that the next generation could do better.

Simple, practical habits we should all adopt:

  • Carry a small trash bag when you're out, especially to beaches or picnics.
  • Hold onto your waste if you can't find a bin immediately. Collect the waste in a bag and throw it in a proper bin.
  • The goal of leaving places better than you found them helps. Instead of depending on other people or systems, do your part in keeping your surroundings clean.

It's not about big speeches or perfect systems but about small, consistent actions.
