Budget carrier Spirit Airlines has abruptly shut down operations, cancelling all flights with immediate effect and asking passengers not to head to the airport. The Florida-based airline confirmed it has begun an “orderly wind-down” of its business, bringing an end to its 34-year run in the ultra-low-cost aviation market.

In a statement issued on May 2, the airline said, “All flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available.” It added that despite efforts to sustain operations, the company could not continue. The shutdown comes after months of financial struggles, combined with a recent surge in global oil prices.

Why Is Spirit Airlines Shutting Down?

Spirit had been under financial pressure for some time. The company said it had taken “extensive and comprehensive efforts” to restructure its business, including a March 2026 agreement with bondholders aimed at keeping operations afloat, as reported by The Economic Times.

Due to rising jet fuel costs, linked to geopolitical tensions such as the Iran conflict, complications only increased. The airline admitted that the “material increase in oil prices and other pressures” significantly impacted its financial outlook.

CEO Dave Davis said the airline required “hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity” to survive but was unable to secure the funding. “The sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices… has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down,” he added.

What Passengers Need To Know

Spirit has clearly advised travellers not to go to airports. With all flights cancelled and no customer service available, passengers must make alternative travel arrangements with other airlines. Those already at the airport have been asked to immediately look for flights with other carriers, as Spirit is unable to provide any assistance.

Refunds And Compensation

Passengers who booked tickets directly using credit or debit cards will receive automatic refunds to their original payment method. Those who booked through travel agents must contact their agents to initiate refunds. For customers who used vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points, compensation will be handled through the bankruptcy court process at a later stage.

Will Extra Costs Be Covered?

The airline has clarified that it will not reimburse passengers for additional expenses such as hotel stays, replacement flights, or other incidental costs caused by cancellations. Travellers with insurance have been advised to check with their providers for possible coverage.
