- United updates policy to allow removal of passengers who refuse to use headphones.
- New rule lets crew eject or ban travellers playing audio aloud without headphones.
- Passengers can request free earbuds as United enforces stricter in‑flight audio rules.
United Airlines has formally revised its Contract of Carriage to allow crew members to remove, or even permanently ban, passengers who refuse to use headphones while playing audio or video aloud on their personal devices. The rule was added on 27 February under the “refusal of transport” section on United Airlines' official website, which outlines behaviours that may lead to denial of boarding or removal during a flight. The updated clause gives United the right to refuse transport on a permanent basis to anyone who continues to play sound on the speaker. The document also states that travellers may be held financially responsible if their behaviour results in “any loss, damage or expense” for the airline.
Why United Says The Policy Was Strengthened
As per reports, the airline has always encouraged travellers to use headphones, but the rapid expansion of its Starlink Wi‑Fi network made it an appropriate moment to clearly formalise the rule in writing. By codifying it in the contract, United says it aims to support crew members who need clearer authority when addressing noise‑related issues onboard. According to The Washington Post, the updated rule sits alongside other safety‑related clauses, including those covering disorderly conduct and behaviours that may disrupt flight operations. United considers the measure part of ensuring a safe and comfortable cabin environment.

Passengers Can Request Free Headphones
United emphasises that travellers who forget their headphones will not automatically face removal. NBC News notes that the airline allows passengers to request a complimentary pair of earbuds if available. Many United aircraft are equipped with Bluetooth‑enabled seat‑back screens, enabling the use of wireless headphones.

How The Rule Will Be Enforced
As per the reports, crew members will generally begin by informing the passenger that headphones are required. If the individual refuses to comply, they may be asked to leave the aircraft. In more serious or repeated cases, United may issue a permanent ban. The airline states that the rule is designed to maintain safety and order in the cabin.
