Kuwait, an emerging and safe Gulf destination that offers a blend of traditional Bedouin culture and an urban-focused experience, has often been a point of great interest for travellers. With striking architecture such as the Kuwait Towers, rich culinary scenes, historic souks and vast desert-to-coast landscapes, the West Asian country witnesses significant tourism every year. However, both residents and tourists are now required to declare cash exceeding KD 3,000 (approximately $9,700 USD/Rs 8,94,368) digitally before entering or leaving the country.

Although travellers heading to or from Kuwait now have a more streamlined process at the airport, they need to take precautionary steps beforehand. The General Administration of Customs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, has officially integrated a "Currency Declaration" service into the Sahel App, as per a report by Arab Times.

This move, part of the country's broader push toward digital transformation and tighter financial monitoring at borders, aims to provide travellers with greater convenience. Ditching the old manual paperwork, travellers and residents will now have a sleek, mobile-friendly process. All you need to do is settle your customs requirements before even reaching the terminal.
If you are carrying large sums of cash or precious jewellery exceeding KD 3,000, you must declare it electronically on the Sahel App before arrival, before departure, or while at the border checkpoint.
The new move does not restrict bank transfers, card payments, or legally documented funds but applies specifically to physical cash exceeding the specified threshold.

Once the declaration is submitted, the system will generate a digital acknowledgement that customs officers can verify instantly at the airport. This allows for quicker verification and smoother passenger flow, especially during peak travel seasons such as summer holidays and religious travel periods. It also helps combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and illicit cash transfers.
For tourists visiting Kuwait, it should be noted that undeclared cash may now be subject to temporary seizure, investigation, fines, or further legal action, depending on the circumstances.
