For instance, when he asked for ice in his water, he was met with a firm "no". It turns out Italians prefer their water at room temperature. He was also surprised to find that buying tickets at the station was significantly more expensive than online. Meal options at the restaurants also disappointed him as they didn't have enough protein options in their dishes.

Other quirks he noted included public washrooms with pedal-operated sinks, restaurants that won't serve cappuccinos after noon, and menus that seem to be carbon copies of each other. He also observed that soldiers patrol the city armed for public safety and shoppers are expected to bag their own groceries at supermarkets. Perhaps most daunting, though, were the roads, where drivers seemed ruthless and pedestrians had to be extremely cautious to stay safe.
