Six members of the Left-affiliated Students Federation of India (SFI) have been arrested for the attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra in the national capital. SFI General Secretary Ritabrata Bandopadhyay and two women are among those arrested.

There was unprecedented chaos today outside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's house. Almost 2,000 agents of a chit fund company that's gone bust blocked the lane outside demanding they be allowed to meet her. After over four hours, some were arrested and most others were forced out of the area.

Exactly 15 days ago, 23-year-old Sudipto Gupta, an activist of the CPM's student wing, the SFI, died in Kolkata. His friends allege he was fatally beaten by the police. The police claim Sudipto hit his head against a lamp post as he hung out of a bus while being taken to jail after he courted arrest.

Hours after shouting protesters surrounded Mamata Banerjee and attacked her minister, Amit Mitra, the West Bengal chief minister has cancelled her meeting with the Prime Minister. Her party says she is unwell with fever. This evening she was administered oxygen and advised bed rest. Mr Mitra has been hospitalised.
