Police in Lucknow have begun investigations into an alleged financial fraud in the elephants statues installed by the BSP government in Lucknow and Noida. The police allege tender norms were possibly tailor-made to favour certain contractors, who sold the stone statues to the government at highly inflated prices.

The Lucknow District Magistrate has said that the statues of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and that of her party's symbol, the elephant, will be veiled across the state on Monday. The Election Commission (EC) had, on Saturday, ordered the covering of statues.
