Malda, which made national headlines in January this year after violence in Kaliachak, was the first stop for Congress President Sonia Gandhi on her campaign for the West Bengal Assembly Elections. And it has already flared a war of words.

Three months after mobs went on a rampage in Bengal's Malda district, set fire to a police station and several vehicles parked around it, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee called it a "small trouble" and accused the BJP of trying to turn it into a "riot".

The Congress is willing to call it an alliance. "Why should we play hide and seek," said Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Kolkata on Tuesday.
