Kathua Case Verdict

The father of an eight-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district last year, moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday seeking enhancement of sentence imposed on six convicts and also challenging the acquittal of one accused.

The special court which convicted six people in the rape and murder of an 8-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, has termed the crime "devilish and monstrous" and said that it was committed in the most "shameful, inhumane and barbaric manner" for which "poetic justice" needs to be done.

The prosecution's failure to verify accused Vishal Jangotra's alibi during the probe in the Kathua rape and murder case led to his acquittal, the special court said as it blamed the Jammu Crime Branch for withholding evidence against him.

The National Commission for Women chairperson on Monday said the Pathankot court decision convicting six accused in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua in January 2018 was not enough and expected harsher punishment for them.

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday said it may challenge the acquittal of the seventh accused in the Kathua gang rape and murder case, in which three persons were sentenced to jail for life and three others for five years each.
