In 2012, a 16-year-old girl in Haryana's Karnal district was abducted and gang-raped in a moving car while she was walking to school. Three weeks later, the two men who had gang-raped the teen, raped and killed her mother, says the police.

The 17-year-old sits in the courtyard of the small home where she lives with her father and four younger siblings. On a wall nearby, a date is etched. It appeared on the day her mother went missing in 2012; she was found dead in a canal nearby two days later. Doctors confirmed she had been raped before she was killed.

When she was 16 and on her way to school in her village in Central Haryana, she was raped, allegedly by two men in August 2012.
