IIT exam format decided, board exams will decide who's eligible

The IIT council has decided that starting next year, students who score in the top 20% of their board exams will take the main or multiple-choice exam. 50,000 students will then take the advanced exam, which will not be held on the same day.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have agreed on a compromise formula on the common entrance exam after revolting against HRD Minister Kapil Sibal's earlier 'one nation one test' formula. At a meeting of IIT Council in New Delhi on Wednesday, the directors of all the 15 IITs agreed to implement the new admission format from next year.
