A municipality office in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian was set on fire by unidentified people days after controversial local body elections in the state.

As BJP performed well in the Jammu and Kashmir local body elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said his party will work hard to fulfill the aspirations of the people.

The BJP has emerged as the clear winner of Jammu province in the urban local body polls conducted earlier this month, securing seven of the region's 10 districts. However, while the party managed to hold on to its traditional stronghold, it ended up losing many municipal committees to Independent candidates as well as rival parties.

The counting of votes for the recently concluded municipal polls began in Jammu and Kashmir this morning. Counting of votes started at 8 am.

The stage is set for the final leg of urban local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir as the counting of votes for the 52 civic bodies, polling for which was held in four phases earlier this month, will be done today.

Jammu and Kashmir is voting today in the fourth and final phase of civic polls, amid an election boycott by regional parties. While polling was originally scheduled to take place for 132 municipal wards, only 37 wards will now vote due to the boycott.

In the third phase of the local body elections in Jammu and Kashmir, voter turnout crossed a little over 16 per cent today. While people in Jammu queued up outside polling booths taking the voting percentage to 81.4, those in the Valley largely stayed away. Just like in the previous phases, around 3.5 per cent votes were cast.

People's Conference Chairman Sajjad Lone, an ally of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, has defended the governor's controversial remarks who had named the next Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation even before the polls were conducted in the city.

The governor also briefed Home Minister Rajnath SIngh on the ongoing urban local bodies polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The voting covering six districts of Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur and Kathua recorded a turnout of 57 per cent till noon, the officials said, quoting information from district elections offices.
