Indigo Airlines Jet Orders

IndiGo, India's biggest airline, is in talks with Pratt & Whitney and CFM International Inc. for its next batch of jet engine orders, according to people familiar with the matter, a rare sign of dealmaking in a sector that's been paralyzed by the virus pandemic.

Aviation regulator DGCA has asked the airlines and Boeing to ensure that pilots who are qualified to fly 737 Max planes in India are given simulator training in order to ensure passenger safety once the aircraft is back in operation, said a senior official.

The French-US engine maker, owned by General Electric and France's Safran, has been competing with the airline's existing engine supplier, Pratt & Whitney, to provide the power for 280 twin-engine A320-family jetliners already on order from Airbus by the Delhi-based budget carrier.

In Jet Airways' absence, cash-strapped Air India is the only Indian carrier that operates wide-body jets capable of non-stop flights to Europe and the US, although Vistara has 6 Boeing Co 787s on order due for delivery from next year.

IndiGo has specialized in buying in bulk, ordering 430 jets in the A320neo family on top of an initial contract for 100 older A320 models. That's made IndiGo one of the biggest buyers of Airbus's best-selling plane. Such large-scale orders help airlines negotiate discounts and better maintenance terms.

Boeing expects India to become the third-largest commercial aviation market by the early 2020s. High oil prices, hefty fuel taxes and a weak rupee have hurt airlines' profitability this year, although pressure is starting to ease as oil prices fall and the currency firms.

IndiGo and Jet Airways have recently introduced new destinations and flights in order to increase connectivity at low fares.

Its statement was issued after reports that it has been forced to cancel 84 flights because of issues with engines on its Airbus neo aircraft.

Carriers like SpiceJet, IndiGo, GoAir and Jet Airways have plans or firmed up orders for over 800 new planes, including a good number of smaller aircraft.

Boeing Co and Airbus Group SE said on Thursday they expect Indian airlines to order up to 1740 jets over the next 20 years, as aircraft manufacturers eye one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets to offset any weaker sales elsewhere.

Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet on Wednesday said they would pursue legal steps against Competition Commission of India's order imposing penalties totalling Rs 258 crore on them for anti-competitive practices related to air cargo.

In a separate filing, InterGlobe Aviation said the company is studying the CCI order and would take legal steps to challenge it in the appropriate forum. "The company has been legally advised that it is not in contravention of the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002," it noted.
