Expressing "solidarity" with students protesting over alleged suicide by a Dalit scholar in Hyderabad, the students of the FTII on Tuesday sat on a day-long hunger strike outside the institute's gate.

FTII students, who called off their relay hunger strike after the government agreed to come to the negotiating table, held talks with Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry officials here today.

A day before protesting students of Film and Television Institute of India are expected to meet the government, they have released a strongly-worded letter signed by 200 American intellectuals, backing their stir and criticizing the Centre.

The students, on September 26 said that they were ready to withdraw their hunger strike to pave the way for a dialogue if the Information and Broadcasting Ministry confirmed a date and venue for talks. The agitating Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students today called off their 18- day-old "hunger strike" in response to the government's communication inviting them for a dialogue to resolve their demands at a meeting slated for September 29 in Mumbai.

The agitating students of the Film and Television Institute of India today said they would withdraw their hunger strike to pave way for a dialogue with the government if the Information and Broadcasting ministry confirmed a date for talks to resolve their demands, including removal of actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the institute.

After nearly 100 days of agitation against Gajendra Chauhan's appointment as FTII chairman, possibility of resolution of the impasse today brightened with the protesting students saying they were ready for talks with the government without any preconditions.

More than three months after it started, the stalemate at India's premier film school shows little sign of a resolution.
