Over 4,700 lost lives in road accidents in TN during Jan-Nov

Chennai: Tamil Nadu continued to be a notoriousstate for road accidents in the country, with 18,188 accidentsreported claiming 4,735 lives between January and Novemberlast year.

This is higher by 231, as in the corresponding period in2010, 4,504 lives were lost, according to a data obtained fromState Traffic Planning Cell.

"These are only figures who lost their lives in the accidentspot. Many more might have lost their lives few days or weeksafter accidents. They are not counted in this data," a seniorpolice official said.

"Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are the stateswith most number of road accidents every year in the country.Though Maharashtra ranks one in the number of registeredvehicles, Tamil Nadu surpasses it in the number of accidentsand fatalities," the official said.

Another 1,657 perons were grievously injured,while 20,224persons suffered simple injuries up to November 30 last year.

The data showed that 9,943 persons were taken to hospitalduring the golden hour by highway patrol vehicles and 7,862lives were saved.

A maximum of 5,492 accidents have happened between noonand 6 pm, followed by 5,133 between 6 pm and midnight.

Of the total 1,36,60,717 vehicles registered in TamilNadu, a whopping 1,12,07,338 two wheelers (a little over 82per cent) are two wheelers.
