Scientists at ISRO applaud the successful Mars mission.

Thiruvananthapuram: Space science in India has become more relevant now as it plays a vital role in the life of the common man in various ways, an example of which was early prediction of 'Hudhud' cyclone in Andhra Pradesh, ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan said in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

"The latest benefit from space programmes was the early prediction of devastating 'Hudhud' cyclone in Andra Pradesh, that enabled authorities take precautionary steps to avoid damage,", he said at a function organised by the state government at the secretariat to honour scientists behind the 'Mars Mission.'

Areas such as telemedicine, tele-education and mapping of natural resources were some of the other advantages of the space programme, he said.

To a request by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to support the state government's initiative to encourage young talent in space technology and research, Mr Radhakrishnan asked VSSC Director M C Dathan to prepare a detailed project report in this regard and submit it to the government.

Mr Radhakrishnan also said the country was celebrating the 50th year of space programme, which started with a launch of small rocket from its Centre at Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram, by successfully completing 'Mangalyan mission'.

Besides Mr Chandy, State Ministers K M Mani, Aryadan Mohammed and Anoop Jacob spoke.

The Chief Minister later presented mementos to 16 scientists who worked on the Mars Mission.
