For an MBA Admission, This Man Threatened to Jump off University Building

Sukhchand was denied an MBA admission thrice by Burdwan University.

Burdwan, West Bengal:

He wanted to do an MBA in Tourism so badly that he waited for three years to get an admission. But when he was third time unlucky, he threatened to jump off the roof of a Burdwan University building on Tuesday and became something of a tourist draw himself.

Sheikh Sukhchand, a graduate in his early twenties from a college in Burdwan in West Bengal, sat for three hours on the university building's four-storey high parapet, writing letters to the vice chancellor, demanding he be given admission by 6 pm the same day or else he'd jump to death.

A helpless crowd of people watched, as did the helpless police.

The drama began at 3 pm. As the deadline neared, a student sneaked up to the roof from the back of the building and grabbed Sukhchand. For some heart stopping moments, it seemed like the 'Good Samaritan' would fail, that Sukhchand would slip out of his shirt and fall to his death. But others clambered up to help and dragged the man off the parapet to safety.

Sukhchand is currently in hospital and under observation.

The police may file a suo moto case of attempted suicide against him. The university too made no comments if Sukhchand will be given admission to the MBA in Tourism course or not.

But the students who watched the three hour long drama stormed inside the university building after Sukhchand was rescued. They were angry that the university took no steps to try and save the youth from taking the ultimate step.

A friend of Sukhchand, Debshankar Singh, claimed that the former was not being offered a seat despite vacancies.

"Even after trying for three years, he has not been given admission. He is mentally broken down. His name is on the merit list, he no admission yet."

The Vice Chancellor of Burdwan University, however, was not available for comments.
