Kharghar police are in search of a person who killed his friend's mother after losing in gambling. The accused has been identified as Rabbul Razak Shaikh, a resident of Kharghar village.
Rabbul along with his friends Mohammed Saleem Basheer Shaikh and Iliyas Shaikh were gambling on Monday night in which Mohammed won Rs 2000. On Tuesday at around 2.30 am, Rabbul had a scuffle with Mohammed over the winning amount.
He took a wooden slab and ran behind Mohammed. Scared Mohammed ran and hid in a place near Kesar garden. Since Rabbul could not find Mohammed anywhere, he went to his residence at Kharghar village and broke opened the door of his house. Rabbul started beating Mohammed's wife Manjila Khatun (20) with the slab due to which she sustained leg and hand injuries.
After hearing the cries, Mohammed's mother Firoza Basheer Shaikh (60) intervened and tried to stop the fight on which Rabbul attacked Firoza with the slab. As a result of this, Firoza died on the spot after which Rabbul dragged her body to the balcony of the house and set her ablaze and fled.
The saree that Firoza was wearing was burnt half, confirmed an official from Kharghar Police Station. At around 6 am, Mohammed reached home and learnt about the incident after which he registered the complaint with Kharghar Police Station. The police reached Rabbul's residence and found that he had fled from the place along with his wife and children. Rabbul, who originally hails from Kolkata, is suspected to have fled to his native.
"The case has been registered and we are searching for the accused. The murder happened in the fit of rage and we are not sure about his motive behind trying to set Firoza on fire. Probably he was trying to destroy the evidence," the official added.
