Arrested after his wife, children committed suicide

Mumbai: A week after his wife jumped from the roof of their 19-storey apartment building in Mumbai, Pawan Gupta was arrested today. He and his sister, who was arrested yesterday, have been remanded to police custody till March 21.

Pawan's family has been accused of abetment of suicide and harassment for dowry.

''Three accused (Pawan's parents and brother-in-law) are absconding and they have filed for anticipatory bail. We will also fight that case and we will see that we will not get anticipatory bail,'' said Additional Commissioner of Police, Ramrao Pawar.

Nidhi Gupta, a professor and a chartered accountant, killed herself along with her children, her 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter, a day before her wedding anniversary.

She had been married to Pawan, a businessman, for 10 years.

In a note left behind, Nidhi Gupta said that "nobody should be held responsible" for her death.

But Nidhi's family claims she was mentally tortured which forced her to take such a drastic step.

''Something must have happened that night, something disastrous that made her take this step. And there were only five people in the house, no servants,'' says Nidhi's sister Noopur.

Five people from Pawan's family, including his parents, have been charged with abetment to suicide and dowry harassment.
