Myth #1: Frequent Shampooing Causes Damage To The Hair

We are sure we all had that notion at some point of time but the fact is that it does not damage the hair.

Expert Advice: "Shampooing routine is variable from person to person. Sometimes shampooing the hair often is required for people with an oily or sweaty scalp whereas it may not be required for people with a dry scalp. Either way, it is important to have a clean scalp at all times even if it requires you to shampoo it on a daily basis," explains celebrity hairstylist Vaishakhi Haria, L'Oreal India's Ambassador and Founder of Splash The Salon and Mantastic Barbers.

Myth #2: Use Of Lemon For Hair Care

Lemon is known for its vitamin C content but it can cause irritation too.

Expert Advice: "So, lemon can actually help improve dandruff a little, but it won't cure it. What it will do is cause irritation of the scalp and if it drops on the face, it can cause a rash. Lemon can bleach the hair though, but it will leave the hair a little frizzy, dry and weird-looking," states celebrity skin and wellness expert Dr Kiran Sethi, MD, Isya Aesthetics.

Myth #3: Oiling Your Hair In Summer Can Cause Trouble

It's a myth that hair doesn't need oil in summers. Oiling is a mandate that needs to be followed throughout the year.

Expert Advice: "Oiling hair in summer creates a shield to protect your hair from sun damage. Sun damage can result in over-drying and dullness in hair texture. Oiling strengthens hair from the roots, makes it stronger and prevents breakage. This works all year long and the key benefit of the oils is the fatty acids present in them which replace the lost lipids in one's hair," explains Rubina Zoya, beauty and hair expert at Innisfree India.

Myth #4: Conditioner Is Not Required For Greasy Hair

Who said that greasy hair doesn't need conditioner in summers? Greasy hair is caused by excess sebum secretion on the scalp. But that doesn't sideline the importance of a conditioner.

Expert Advice: "It is a natural process. However, that does not reach the end. A conditioner is a must for mid-lengths and ends of the hair for maintaining the moisture level of your hair. There are many light conditioners available for such hair types," suggests Haria.

Myth #5: Fix Dandruff By Oiling Your Hair

Oiling might be the go-to solution for most of your hair care woes, but dandruff ain't one of those.

Expert Advice: "Actually, hair oiling will worsen the situation as it will make your scalp more prone to stickiness, so oiling is not the right case with dandruff, " explains Dr Kiran.

Myth #6: Home Remedies Work For All Hair Types

Just because something works for one person does not mean it will work or another.

Zoya explains that some ingredients can be extremely harsh on the scalp.

Expert Advice: "Home remedies are not always safe option to give try as we don't know how the ingredients are cultivated or how much chemical fertilizer has been used to grow particular ingredients," she says.

She further explains, "Make sure to use hair care remedies as per your hair type that is mild and non-irritating. Avoid using lemon, apple cider vinegar, beer rinse and tea tree oil directly on your scalp that can be harsh to the scalp."

Expert Hair Care Tips To Follow For Summer

  • Keep your hair hydrated as summer hair ailments like dryness and split-ends can be helped with the inclusion of deep conditioning treatments in your summer hair regimen.

  • Change your shampoo and conditioner to accommodate the new season or change in climate.

  • If you tend to sweat a lot during summer, shampoo the hair often and keep the scalp clean at all times. If the sweat dries out on the scalp, it may make the scalp flaky.

  • Use aloe vera, which is mostly full of water, as it is a great natural remedy to fix dehydrated hair.
