While the ritual of oiling one's hair is steadily catching up in Western countries, it has been an ancient South East Asian practice. Passed down through generations, most Indian-born individuals have experienced it at some point. Not only was it a cherished time to curl up on the floor for one's mother or grandmother to knead away the worries from the scalp, it was also when chitter-chatter was swapped, healthy blood circulation was promoted and hair was well-slicked for a warm hair wash to follow. Unsurprisingly, I now view the practice with loving nostalgia and can see why it is catching on with the rest of the world. Akash Mehta and Nikita Mehta of Fable & Mane are partly responsible for this. The British-Indian brother and sister behind the emerging brand aim to encourage the age-old tradition of hair oiling, which continues to be popular in India, across the rest of the world. NDTV Swirlster got Akash's expert hair care techniques for the best champi of your life so far.
Don't Forget Your Neck
"Your neck is like akin to the bark of the tree while the head is where the roots are located," says Akash. While massaging your head, don't forget to find the pressure points on your neck and add them in for a complete champi.
Identify Your Chakra Points
"The easiest way to identify your chakra points on your head is by making tiger ears with your hands. The spot you naturally place your hands on either side of your head above the ears will be where your chakra points are located," says Akash. These points are integral when massaging the head.
Ruffle Your Hair
While kneading and pressing are common massage technique, Akash talks about the importance of ruffling the hair as well. "Scientifically massaging the scalp is important because you're increasing blood circulation while delivering oxygen and nutrients to the scalp," concludes Akash.
